This so called "board of education" was used by Robert L. (Bob) Carson
who was an educator in the Scott County School System for 43 years of
his life from 1931 until 1974. Carson taught at many of the one room
schools that once dotted the landscape before major consolidation took
place in the 1950s; among these were the Annadell, Sulfur Springs, and
Low Gap schools. Carson also taught at the larger Huntsville High
School and Oneida
Elementary. Teaching a
room of students of various grade levels could be daunting. Esther
Sharp Sanderson, local historian and educator, related in her book
"County Scott And Its Mountain Folk" about a teacher who brought in a
bundle of long hickory switches and exclaimed, "I will chastise thee,
with these, them, and those."
