How many of your grandmothers had one of these? This "cordless" waffle
iron was used on a wood burning cook stove and is around one hundred
years old. When wood burning cook stoves were introduced in the 1890s,
mountain people pursuing cash jobs were able to buy accessories for them
like this. This waffle iron would be heated on the stove, greased,
then the batter poured in and the iron turned over. Other than being
heated with wood, this iron works like
the waffle iron at your house. Have one of these and want to make your
own waffles? Check out this blog post that tells you exactly how to do
it: How to make waffles on a wood burning cookstove.
Bonus fact: the Sears & Roebuck catalog for 1897 sold waffle irons
similar to this one for $.65. This is equal to $19.43 in 2017 currency.
