Prince Albert pipe tobacco was the most popular product made by the R.
J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and was introduced in 1907. The red can
served as their trademark much like the small cloth pouch served as the
trademark for Country Gentleman, which has been featured before. Prince
Albert Tobacco was named after King Edward VII, the son of Queen
Victoria of England. The ever ingenious people of Appalachia found uses
for the empty cans. The men would
often take these waterproof cans and shorten them, replacing the bottom,
and use them to hold matches, one of which is shown from a private
collection.
