With the introduction of the Sears and Roebuck catalog in the mountains,
people were not only able to buy luxury items that they previously had
not access to but also tools and kitchen items for use on the farm.
This interesting press like item is not a juicer, as many believe, but a
sausage stuffer. Pieces of lean meat left over from the annual hog
killing were placed inside while a piece of animal intestine was slipped
onto the funnel shaped spout. The
handle was pressed down and the scrap meat pieces were inserted into the
intestine, producing link sausage. The sausage could then be hung up
in the smokehouse to cure and savored all winter long.
